Company Profile
Founded in 2009 in Fushimi, Kyoto, Sandwich is a creative platform for contemporary art that began in a renovated sandwich factory building. Sandwich aims to connect creatives associated with Nawa and allow them to collaborate on various exciting projects. Currently, Sandwich operates across three studios in Kyoto and DR (Drawing Room) in Tokyo, which allows it to be flexible and mobile in its activities. Sandwich is not limited to a studio and office space but is also designed as a laboratory for experimenting with the possibilities of materials, a factory that develops the necessary equipment and tools, a hub that connects with skilled craftsmen and workshops involved in the production process, a practical education system that connects students with the art world, and a residency space welcoming artists and visitors from around the globe.
Job Description
Sandwich Residency Program offers interns a hands-on opportunity to engage with the studio’s ongoing projects. Interns will assist with art production/architecture projects, support logistical and fabrication tasks, participate in daily studio maintenance, and contribute to research, documentation, or preparation of materials. The internship provides practical learning in contemporary art practices, exposure to Kohei Nawa’s work, and experience in professional studio operations. Applicants should be proactive, able to communicate in Japanese or English, and maintain a clean and organized workspace. The program requires valid travel insurance for the duration. Interns will be supervised by studio staff, follow studio rules, and adhere to visa requirements for entry to Japan.
Additional expectations include maintaining safety, confidentiality, and adherence to the studio code of conduct.
