Company Profile

Pors & Rao are an art duo, making objects and installations that often imbibe life-like physical animation and responsive behaviours. Their works are often conceived as a kind of being, expressing basic behavior traits such as shyness, fatigue and dependency; highlighting involuntary aspects of human behavior and relationships. Their work is exhibited around the world. Their need for robotic puppetry as a medium, led them to own an unchartered technical research path

in collaboration with various Swiss institutions since 2012, including Wyss Zurich and ETH which culminated in a pilot lab of their own in 2020. Here they took forward project PATHOS, a system for crafting physical movement and response for non engineers. In 2022, they exited ETH as a Spinoff, with the aim of reuniting the development of artworks and tools under the same roof at the studio, alongside fabrication and workshop facilities.

Job Description

The job is about developing the interface of PATHOS (poetic animatronics for hands-on systems), a robotics kit that was partly developed in ETH in Zurich. We now want to entirely redo the browser based interface written in Javascript. The existing functions should be thoroughly analyzed and understood, desired functions mapped out and ordered in hierarchies of importance. By collaborating with both the artists and the programmers the intern will develop a good understanding of the required usability. A good understanding of javascript UI objects is a big plus. The goal of the internship is to map out all of the desired UI solutions and to either use prompting skills (AI) or direct programming to test it in a browser following the design styles provided. The most important part is the precision in the analysis and capturing all the complexities involved in a design document. Second is to implement as much as time allows.

Required Skills

These are the skills we are looking abilities;

a. Proactive in understanding of the artist's requirements,

making interface paper mock-ups to map out functions

b. Good grasp of usability and prompting using AI to mock

up and test interfaces in javascript

c. Basic understanding of JavaScript and good ability to

work with programmers to understand limitations and

technical requirements. Good collaborative skills.

d. Organized, methodical, and good ability to understand the

goal and be self-driven to reach the goals within the

allotted time
