Company Profile

Pors & Rao are an art duo, making objects and installations that often imbibe life-like physical animation and responsive behaviours. Their works are often conceived as a kind of being, expressing basic behavior traits such as shyness, fatigue and dependency; highlighting involuntary aspects of human behavior and relationships. Their work is exhibited around the world. Their need for robotic puppetry as a medium, led them to own an unchartered technical research path
in collaboration with various Swiss institutions since 2012, including Wyss Zurich and ETH which culminated in a pilot lab of their own in 2020. Here they took forward project PATHOS, a system for crafting physical movement and response for non engineers. In 2022, they exited ETH as a Spinoff, with the aim of reuniting the development of artworks and tools under the same roof at the studio, alongside fabrication and workshop facilities.

Job Description

The job is about prototyping a series of experimental clothing for art duo Por & Rao, including uniforms for the two and their team/ It would involve both, more artistic expressions and more technical ones. The artistic expressions would involve working with handcrafted fabric, or waste materials and patching them together in interesting, innovative ways using crafts techniques available in the
workshops. These are personal expressions in close discussion with the artists, perhaps in contrast with the strict artistic visual language. The industrial approach, would entail a small series of ‘uniforms’, highly practical- reflecting precision in the work, and for working at the studio, making installations etc. They also have a rich archive of local handcrafted fabrics and techniques that may be used also conceptually for experiments.
