Company Profile

Pors & Rao are an art duo, making objects and installations that often imbibe life-like physical animation and responsive behaviours. Their works are often conceived as a kind of being, expressing basic behavior traits such as shyness, fatigue and dependency; highlighting involuntary aspects of human behavior and relationships. Their work is exhibited around the world. Their need for robotic puppetry as a medium, led them to own an unchartered technical research path
in collaboration with various Swiss institutions since 2012, including Wyss Zurich and ETH which culminated in a pilot lab of their own in 2020. Here they took forward project PATHOS, a system for crafting physical movement and response for non engineers. In 2022, they exited ETH as a Spinoff, with the aim of reuniting the development of artworks and tools under the same roof at the studio, alongside fabrication and workshop facilities.

Job Description

The job entails both;
A. Building and testing mechanical assemblies of several artworks from table top scale to life-size. This is an iterative process, with necessary parts that require redesign and fabrication  and a cycle of re-testing until robust and maintenance free.
B. Building, in discussion with the artists, mechanical mock ups and prototypes of new artworks/ experiments- with the ability to be animated, through physical/ hand operated puppetry- by  pulling strings or levels or rotating discs, etc.
Both of these have to be designed in a CAD software (Autodesk Fusion), fabricated via rapid  prototyping techniques/workshop, or machining processes and assembled and  installed in the artists' studio. Several reiterations may be required. The scale of the model may be from the size of a matchbox to the size of a small room.
