As the official representation of Switzerland, the Embassy covers all matters concerning diplomatic relations between the two countries. It represents Swiss interests in the areas of political, economic, financial and legal affairs, as well as science, education and culture.

 

Completed in August 2006, the Swiss Residence is the official home of the Ambassador of Switzerland to the United States and an extension of the Swiss Embassy’s work space. It hosts approximately 400 official events and 3,000 guests in any given year. 


Job Description

The objective of the position is to perform culinary preparations for events and meals at the Residence of the Ambassador.  The Assistant Chef will answer to the main Chef of the Residence and work in a team of 6 to perform duties in support of the Ambassador’s guest agenda.  General cleaning, participation with the team to achieve goals and some representation for the Science Section of the Embassy will round out the overall duties of the Assistant Chef.

 

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Assist the Chef in all aspects of culinary preparation;
  • Attend team meetings and participate to create events and solve problems;
  • Take inventory as needed, keeping running Excel sheets with the kitchen as needed;
  • Prepare menus, order food, assist with set-up and break-down of the kitchen;
  • Participate in some meetings of the Science Section on the Swiss apprenticeship model
  • Assistance on projects as needed

Required Skills

Required Skills:
  • Graduation from a school of vocational training in Switzerland in the area of culinary preparation;
  • 2-4 years’ experience in a food preparation environment;
  • Excellent English skills in verbal, some written, usage;
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Suite programs;
  • Ability to work independently to achieve goals as established by the Chef and Residence Manager

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with Swiss cuisine, including preparation, ingredient choices, presentation, of all cultures and regions of Switzerland;
  • Interest in deserts and developing new ideas;
  • Understanding of fusion and multicultural culinary experiences;
  • Ability to prepare specialized menus, such as vegan, gluten-free, etc.
